First Enrty

This is my first entry and I can’t think of a thing to say. You’ll have to write me and get me started.

Jeff, do you subscribe to each others blogs or is anyone able to join in?

You said you needed help getting started. Well, the comment you just left on my blog about time was quite a start! Although some of the sentences were in response to my writing, it could very well be a stand-alone piece with a few revisions. (By revisions, I mean explaining sentences that only people who share your history would know about.)

You have an enticing writer’s voice. I like to think I got some of that from you. I don’t know much about blogging, either; from what I’ve read by other people I figure most people don’t know much about blogging or there’s just not much to it. Overall, I think most people don’t know how to express themselves appropriately or accurately. It doesn’t matter so much what your topic is on a blog—the important thing is expressing that topic in an engaging way.

I give my third graders a writing prompt every morning, but I always tell them, “You don’t have to write about this. Write about what you’re thinking or feeling this morning, or in what you’re interested. The prompt is here only if you can’t think of anything else.” This week, Nick started his morning journal by writing, “I don’t feel like writing about the prompt today and I don’t want to tell you why. I’m just glad to be here because you are nice and funny. I wish you liked sports, though.” Since all of that came from his emotion, it feels powerful to read, and it makes me want to read more.

Writing is such work, but then when it’s done there is no one to read it sometimes. Writing is especially worth the effort when it will be read; at least that’s how I feel. You used to write so much and the confidence that Mr. Shaw gave you took you a long ways. I think it is sad that you have not written much in the last few years. When I learned about how easy it is to publish blogging this week, I immediately thought of you. I hope that you will write more knowing that someone (me) is going to read it. I find that my third graders write more and better when they have a real purpose for writing.

Thank you for reading my posts and commenting on them! I also read your Xanga posts about Debbie. I had not realized you were doing that, but I did recognize much of the content from e-mails you had sent out during the year. It looks like you have been “blogging” for a while now anyway!

(Blog is short for web log, which—as you said—is just online journaling.)

Hey....your links are Google News and Edit Me. Tell me what links you'd like to have on your site and I'll put them up. It's not real easy, so I'll do it for you if you like.

What other links are there? What options do I have? Thanks for the encouragement. It takes me a while to get the wheels moving to write, but when I finish a peice I have a great feeling of accomplishment evenif I know I will be the only one to read it. Although I am more inspired to write with more depth knowing someone will read it and hopefully enjoy the thoughts I share.

I can't beleive the last blog entry was in Sept.2006. I must have been so wraped up in life stuff so much I have forgotten how to have fun or focus on what I think or feel. I'm going to attempt to change that.
